Choosing the Best Bike for Your Child
It's an exciting time in every parent's life and indeed your child's when we purchase their first bike. It's a heartfelt purchase and an important one.
Size is certainly the most important aspect of this purchase. You want to strike a balance between safety and value for money. You want them to be safe, but also allow room for their growth.
Children's bikes are measured by their wheel size, for example a 12" bike will have a wheel diameter of 12". As a guide, 12" bikes are suitable for ages 3 to 5, 16" bikes are best for ages 5 to 8 and 7 to 10 year olds best suit 20" bikes.
That being said, there are no hard and fast rules. You really just need to make sure that they can safely reach the handlebars and touch the ground with the tips of their toes.
Depending on your child's skill level, you might like to purchase some training wheels. 12" bikes generally come equipped with training wheels, but you can purchase a set to attach to larger bikes if required.
There are also numerous 'fun' attachments that may be added to your child's bike to enhance the experience. Pop down to your local bike store to view the range of handlebar tassels, spokey dokeys, baskets, flags and the like.
When it comes to quality and price, this is really just determined by budget. The more you spend, generally the greater the safety, durability and performance.

I'm going to college and I need a good hybrid/commuter bike, my budget is around $500 and I like treks. advice?
I'm not sure what bike to get, I will need storage space I have baskets to add but I'm not sure what the best bike to get around campus would be. It would be great if it was high quality and could last me a while.
Wait 'till you get on campus then find a used bike with normal handlebars, not a racing bike! Look in local bike shops (LBS), they usually have good used bikes. Then you will have cash left over to buy your helmet, lock, lights, rear rack, air pump, and a couple of lunches. You are, of course, just looking for a common every-day commuter bike to ride a few miles. Fenders are a plus!
