About the Author
Would a publisher consider publishing a 12 year old's novel?
I happen to know a very gifted 12 year old [my best friend's niece]whom is currently taking high school english classes, and has a manuscript of a novel she has been working on for a while now. She would have access to an agent, but i was considering self-publishing the novel instead. what would be a better option for her?
Wow, big congrats to such a gifted English student!
Publishers/literary agents will take anything that has market potential/a good plot. Age never factors in to the equation. If it's good, they'll sell it! (In fact, her age may be an advantage here, imagine the headlines a literary agent could see: 12 Year Old Publishes Novel etc.) It would be a big leverage point.
Self-publishing is not at all a good option. It is, in fact, the worst. People who self-publish don't get recongnized + the only sales they make are usually from family and friends. It is also a hell of a lot of work to self-publish with not very pleasing results.
My advice to you is to send a query letter to a couple of literary agents (never straight to a publisher. A literary agent is (usually) free, and a good negotiator with publishing houses.
Since you say she "would" have access to a literary agent, go for that option. Self-publishment, as I said before, is not very marketable nor popular. Sure, it may seem the only way to get published, but she won't sell many copies at all.
